How to Print & Customize
Everything you need to know about working with your digital patterns—from understanding layered PDFs to customizing your fit and printing at home.
Understanding Layered PDF Files
Every Seamless Symphony pattern comes as a layered PDF file. Think of it like a digital version of tissue paper patterns—each layer can be shown or hidden depending on your needs.
Layers typically include:
- • Pattern pieces — the actual garment parts you'll cut
- • Seam allowances — included or optional, depending on your preference
- • Grainlines and notches — placement guides for accurate cutting
- • Size markers — so you know which size is which
- • Instructions — step-by-step sewing guidance
You can turn layers on or off in Adobe Reader, Preview (Mac), or any PDF reader that supports layers. This lets you print only what you need.
Printing Options
A4 Paper
Perfect if you have a standard home printer. Print one page at a time and tape the pieces together using the registration marks.
Best for: Small patterns or when you're printing a few pieces at a time.
US Letter
Similar to A4 but slightly smaller. Included for international patterns. Tape pieces together using the alignment marks.
Best for: Sewists in the US or those with US Letter paper stock.
A0 Tiling
Print the entire pattern on one large sheet at a print shop (like your local Staples or a professional printer).
Best for: Larger patterns or if you want to avoid taping multiple pages together.
How to Take Accurate Measurements
Getting your measurements right is the key to a perfect fit. Wear the type of clothing you'll wear under your finished garment (like a fitted t-shirt or bra), and measure over it.
Bust/Chest: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape parallel to the floor.
Waist: Measure around your natural waist (the narrowest part), relaxed and not pulled tight.
Hip: Measure around the fullest part of your hips, keeping the tape level.
Length: For dresses or skirts, measure from your shoulder or waist down to where you want the hem.
Pro tip: Take measurements twice to ensure accuracy, and ask a friend to help—it's easier than measuring yourself.
Custom Sizing Options
Every Seamless Symphony pattern includes options for customization:
Standard Sizing
Choose your size (XS, S, M, L, XL, etc.) and download the pattern for that size only. Simple and straightforward.
Made-to-Measure
Provide your specific measurements and we'll customize the pattern to your exact fit—perfect for a truly personalised garment.
Fabric & Notions Requirements
Each pattern includes a detailed list of what you'll need, but here's what to expect:
- • Fabric yardage — specified for each size and layout
- • Notions — buttons, zippers, elastic, thread, etc.
- • Interfacing — for structure and stability
- • Seam allowances — typically 0.5–1 inch, depending on the pattern
We always recommend buying a little extra fabric to account for shrinkage and any cutting mistakes—it's better to have too much than too little.
Printing Tips & Troubleshooting
Print at 100% scale (no scaling)
The most common printing error. Always check your printer settings to ensure the PDF prints at actual size. "Fit to page" or "shrink to fit" will make your pattern too small.
Use the registration marks to align pages
Each page has small marks in the corners. When taping pages together, align these marks precisely so the pattern pieces line up correctly.
Tape on the back, not the front
Use clear tape on the back of the pattern pages so you can still read the markings and grain lines on the front side.
Use quality paper
Standard printer paper works, but slightly heavier paper (card stock or pattern paper) holds up better when you're pinning and cutting.

Find Your Perfect Fit
Getting the right size is the foundation of a successful sewing project. Our detailed measurement guides and size charts take the guesswork out of fit—so you can sew with confidence from the start.
How to Take Accurate Measurements
Wear the undergarments and shoes you'll wear with the finished garment. Use a soft measuring tape and keep it snug but not tight. Measure over a thin layer if needed, and always measure at the fullest part of each area.
Key Measurements We Need
- Bust: Around the fullest part of your chest
- Waist: At your natural waistline
- Hips: Around the fullest part of your hips
- Length: From shoulder to desired hem (varies by style)
- Sleeve: From center back neck to wrist (for long sleeves)
Made-to-Measure Customization
Every Seamless Symphony pattern can be customized to your exact measurements. No need to grade between sizes or make complex adjustments—we'll draft your pattern to fit your body perfectly. It's the difference between a good fit and a perfect fit.
Pro Tip: Measure twice, note once. Write down your measurements in centimetres and keep them handy when browsing our patterns. Most of our designs work best with a 2–5 cm ease (extra room for movement)—we'll guide you through this during customization.
Sizing & Fit Questions
Always choose the size that matches your bust measurement, as this is the hardest area to alter. You can adjust waist and length more easily during sewing. If you're close to a size boundary, our made-to-measure service lets us grade your pattern to exact measurements—no compromises.
Ease depends on the garment style. Fitted dresses usually need 2–3 cm ease; relaxed tops need 5–8 cm; oversized styles need 10+ cm. Each Seamless Symphony pattern includes recommended ease in its description. When you customize your pattern, we'll help you choose the right amount for your style.
We don't recommend it. Clothing sizes vary wildly between brands and countries. Your actual measurements are always more reliable. Even if measuring feels tedious, it takes 5 minutes and ensures your finished garment fits beautifully. We provide clear instructions to make it easy.
Your pattern download is yours to keep and use indefinitely. If your measurements change, you can request a new customized version of the same pattern at any time. For made-to-measure patterns, we can regenerate your PDF with updated measurements for a small adjustment fee.
Yes. Our made-to-measure service works for all body types and heights. Standard patterns are typically graded from XS to XL, but custom sizing lets us create patterns for any measurements. If you don't see your size in a standard pattern, email us about customization—we've got you covered.
Every pattern page includes a detailed size chart, finished garment measurements, and recommended ease. You can compare these to your own measurements to predict fit. Our product descriptions also note whether a style runs loose, fitted, or oversized. Still unsure? Email us for a quick fit consultation before you buy.
